I am passionate about unravelling disordered eating behaviours and helping people of all ages to understand what influences our eating behaviours and what we can do about it. Eating is something we do everyday, several times a day and so if this relationship isn’t very positive it can have a big impact on the rest of our lives too.
Having worked in food, nutrition and health for over 20 years, I have seen many adults, parents, families and children struggling with the pressure of wanting to lose weight. Many years’ experience has taught me, and now the evidence also supports the fact that, diets don’t work for most people. Providing meal plans don’t work in the long term and using behaviour change techniques help a little but our relationship with food is very complex and personal. Everyone’s body is unique to them and has had their own personal series of food experiences that has led them to where they are now.
I had a light bulb moment when I recently trained intuitive eating. Suddenly all my thoughts about how to help people achieve a body they feel comfortable in was being supported with research. More and more research trials are starting to emerge that supports a weight inclusive approach. By delving into the reasons behind our eating behaviours we start to understand and acceptance ourselves and from that point on we can start again. We can unlearn some of the barriers to a healthy relationship with food and start to make positive change.
There is something though that I say to all clients, whether it is during one of our online courses or in a 1-2-1 consultation… the only person that can change you…is you. Changing habits is hard, really hard, especially if these behaviours have been established over a lifetime. It does need determination, and the support of others, but change is possible.

It is not a quick fix, it is a journey that starts with accepting that diets have not helped you and that you want to find another way.
It is for that reason that I feel so strongly about teaching the principles of intuitive eating to new mums so that you can help your children to grow up with an established healthy relationship with food. So that you can feel confident that you have done their best to provide the right food environment so that your child will grow up feeling relaxed and comfortable about food choices and their own body. Research shows that instilling healthy food behaviours from birth has life-long effects. They may wobble along the way but you will have provided them with the best start. That is all any parent can do.
